Robot that flies like a bird!

Man long dreamt of flying “Like a bird”. While many said over the millennia that either God forbade man from flight, or it’s impossible the bird’s wings are too intricate or complex to reproduce. Leonard designed long ago an avian inspired wing.

Man's hubris made him want to fly

This has now changed thanks to Markus Fischer and his team from Festo a company specialized in industrial pneumatic actuators, sensors and controls ….

Plenty of robots can fly — but none can fly like a real bird. That is, until Markus Fischer and his team at Festo built SmartBird, a large, lightweight robot, modeled on a seagull, that flies by flapping its wings. A soaring demo fresh from TEDGlobal 2011.
